Manage family members

managefam.jpg There are three types of decisions that you must make for individual family members:
  • How many hours each member of the family will work each day
  • Whether to send each child to school
  • Whether to send individual family members to see a doctor

If subsistence was not met, you must also decide how to divide up the family's food.

Daily hours of labor for adults and children

  • At the start of the simulation, your family consists of two adults, Kodjo and Fatou, each of whom can work up to 12 hours each day.
  • Once Fatou has attained the age of 20, you can attempt to have a child.
  • While Fatou is pregnant, she can work up to 6 hours each day.
  • An infant under the age of 5 cannot work.
  • A child between the ages of 5 and 10 can work up to 4 hours each day if not attending primary school.
  • A child between the ages of 10 and 15 can work up to 8 hours each day if not attending secondary school.

  • When a child reaches the age of 5, you may choose to enroll him/her in primary school. A child enrolled in primary school cannot contribute to family labor, but education will improve the child's future productivity.
  • Upon completion of primary school, you may choose to enroll a child in secondary school. Only children who have completed all years of primary school are eligible for secondary school.
  • School meals are a village improvement that provide children with a full day's food. The calories obtained from school meals will be listed under manage family food.

Doctor visit

  • On each turn, you can decide whether to send individual family members to see a doctor. A doctor visit can improve health. You may only send a family member to the doctor if health is below 100%.
